The Miyako Pony (宮古馬) is a rare native breed from Miyako Island in southern Japan, with fewer than 50 individuals remaining. Believed to date back to at least the 13th century, these ponies have been bred in the region for centuries and are designated as a prefectural natural treasure. They are small, averaging between 110 and 120 cm in height, and historically served as the island’s primary mode of transportation until 1960, when roads for cars were introduced. The Miyako Pony remains a unique part of Japan’s equestrian heritage.
