Heavier breeds from Holland, Germany, and Flanders were brought over and became known as "The Great Horse". As warfare changed, so did the role of the horses. They were used for agriculture and forestry, for towing barges along the canals, hauling trams, and as a main source of transportation. In 1884, the horses were officially named the "Shire". Largest horse breed in the world. Weighing in at 1800-2400 pounds and are 16-18 hands high. Black, brown, bay, and gray. The breed standard for a gelding is that, "He should be full of courage and should look like and be able to do a full day's work." They are very gentle, powerful, steadfast and a joy to ride and drive. In the 1960's the popularization of motorized vehicles, the population of the Shire hose went from well over a million to just a few thousand. Today the breed is still endangered.
