The Costa Rican Paso, or Costarricense de Paso, is the national horse breed of Costa Rica, officially recognized in 1994. Developed through selective breeding of local horses with Pura Raza Española (PRE) and Peruvian Paso influences, this breed is known for its distinctive, high-energy gait and spirited nature, often referred to as brío. Originally bred as a versatile working horse, it is used for cattle work, transportation, and traditional Costa Rican festivities, including street celebrations and rodeos. Costa Rican Paso Horses come in a variety of colors.
