The American Quarter Horse Association originally had a minimum height requirement of 14.2hh. The Quarter Pony is commonly thought of as a, “little Quarter Horse” and they often are... But, the first Quarter Pony Association was founded in 1964 by a man named Harold Wymore. He wanted to recognize the small horses and ponies that were successful in both the show rind and working the farm. Ranging in height from 46 up to 58 inches. Parentage could be unknown as long as they showed characteristics of Quarter type ponies.

The International Quarter Pony Association was formed in 2005. Standard registrations require at least one parent to be: International Quarter Pony Association, American Quarter Horse Association, American Paint Horse Association, Appaloosa Horse Club, or Pony of America. They do allow for ponies with certain color patterns. Quarter Ponies can be found all around the United States and in several other countries. Many riders prefer their smaller size. They continue to prove their versatility in the show ring and out on the trails.
