The Swedish Ardennes, or Svensk Ardennerhäst, is a robust draft horse breed celebrated for its strength, endurance, and gentle temperament. This breed was introduced to Sweden in 1873, originating from the Ardennes Highlands located in southeastern Belgium. The initial horses were crossed with other breeds in Sweden, leading to their popularity, particularly in central and southern regions of the country.
There are approximately 4,000 Swedish Ardennes registered in the country. They typically stand between 15 and 16 hands, with stallions ranging from 15.1hh to 16.1hh and mares generally between 15hh and 16hh. They come in various colors, including bay, chestnut, black, and different roan variations.
These horses are primarily used for driving and excel at pulling heavy loads and performing forestry work due to their remarkable strength, endurance, and good-natured disposition.
