The Taishu Horse is a rare native breed from Tsushima, a remote island in southwestern Japan. Tsushima is believed to be one of the earliest regions in Japan to have horses, with historical records dating back to the year 739. Despite their small size, Taishu Horses are known for their strength and ability to carry heavy loads, making them essential workhorses before the advent of cars and tractors. The breed remains critically endangered, with fewer than 50 individuals left. To help preserve them, the Taishu Horse Preservation Association was established in 1972.
