The Timor Pony is named after the island in Southeast Asia where the breed was developed, but it is closely linked with Australia. When Australia was settled, ponies were brought over from Timor as they made excellent working ponies adapted to the environment. Currently, there are very few Timor Ponies in captivity, with under 10 registered or purebred individuals known. They have maintained a very ancient look about them. One of the breeding mares, Indira, is at least 20 years old. Although there are ponies on the island of Timor, their breeding hasn’t been recorded, and modern breeds may have been introduced over the years. Due to regulations, ponies cannot be exported at this time. There are also wild Timor Ponies located on the Coburg Peninsula in Northern Australia, and efforts are underway to research these ponies.
