About The Breed

The Black Forest Horse, also known as the Schwarzwälder Kaltblut or Black Forest Coldblood, is a rare and ancient draft breed originating from Germany's Black Forest region. This compact yet powerful horse was bred for its strength and resilience to endure the region’s long, cold winters and thrive on minimal resources, often relying on a diet of hay or dry leaves while sharing shelter with farm families. Known for their distinctive liver chestnut coats with flowing flaxen manes, Black Forest Horses are ideally suited for work in dense forests, agriculture, and transportation. Today, they excel in carriage driving, light draft work, and even therapeutic riding. Their manageable size, calm disposition, and versatility make them an enduring favorite, celebrated for both their beauty and historical significance in the region.
