The Freiberger, also known as the Franches-Montagnes, is Switzerland’s native light draft breed, known for its versatility and calm, reliable temperament. Originally developed in the Mountains of Western Switzerland, Freibergers were bred as robust workhorses capable of performing in agriculture, forestry, and light transport. Today, they are cherished throughout the country as multi-purpose horses, often used in recreational riding, driving, and even as therapy horses. Standing around 14.3 to 15.3 hands, these hardy horses are chestnut, bay, or brown in color, and are known for their strength, sure-footedness, and adaptability.
In the heart of Switzerland, surrounded by breathtaking alpine landscapes, the Freiberger became the 114th breed in my Quest to ride every horse breed. We filmed this experience at the Engadin River Ranch, where I explored the trails on my Quest Horse, Hesta. Known for their calm, steady nature, these horses were a joy to ride as we navigated peaceful mountain paths, and the sound of distant cowbells added a magical touch to the adventure. If you’re ever in Switzerland, this ranch offers an unforgettable way to experience the beauty of the Freiberger breed and the Swiss countryside!
