The Garrano is one of Portugal's most ancient horse breeds, with roots tracing back to the Celtic horses. Known for their small size, strength, and resilience, Garrano ponies have historically been integral to local agriculture and mountain biodiversity. Recognizable by their rich bay coats, black manes, and tails, they possess a unique temperament that forms a deep bond with their handlers. With an average height of 123–135 cm, these ponies are sure-footed in rugged terrain and occasionally gaited. Today, they remain an endangered breed with fewer than 2,000 individuals, supported by dedicated breeders and organizations working to preserve their rich heritage.
