About The Breed

The Sorraia is a rare and primitive horse breed native to Portugal, possibly one of the oldest in Europe. Discovered grazing near the Sorraia River in the early 20th century, these small yet resilient horses boast distinctive primitive markings, including a dorsal stripe and zebra-like leg stripes. Standing between 140 and 150 cm, they are adapted to thrive in extreme conditions. Every Sorraia alive today traces its lineage back to the conservation efforts of Dr. Ruy d’Andrade, who recognized their unique traits and initiated a breeding program. Known for their alert yet cooperative nature, the Sorraia is thought to have influenced the development of the Lusitano and some South American breeds. With fewer than 250 horses in existence, their survival depends on passionate breeders and dedicated conservation efforts.

This episode was filmed at the historic Coudelaria de Alter, a stud farm in Portugal renowned for breeding Lusitanos for centuries. They have also played a vital role in the preservation of the Sorraia breed. Here, I had the privilege of meeting António Mendes Pinto and Ana Ribeiro.
