The Yonaguni Pony (与那国馬) is an endangered native breed from Okinawa, Japan, specifically from the Yonaguni Island region. These ponies are small, standing between 10.3 and 11.3 hands high, and are always brown with no white markings. Historically, they played an essential role in farming and transporting goods like rice and sugarcane until about 50 years ago. Today, the Yonaguni Pony Society works to preserve the breed, with around 120 individuals remaining. The ponies are now used for tourism, therapy, animal-assisted education programs, and even swimming in the ocean. Known for their good nature, intelligence, and hardiness, they are beloved for their quiet yet responsive temperament.
